Books I Have Read But Lately
Lisa Jain Thompson
Thursday, 23 August 2012
Fairfax, VA, USA. Summers come, summers go, but the summer reading list is forever and I recline on the edge of somnolence, roused by our books waiting to be shelved or boxed away.

This is a partial list of my summer reading. It doesn’t include a dozen or more e-books I have read or any book I may have re-read. It doesn’t even include every non-e-book I have started and finished.

The Encounters at State College
Lisa Jain Thompson
Sunday, 15 July 2012
Washington, DC, USA. A Spectre haunts State College. A university in Pennsylvania, renowned for its smug self-regard and football integrity, has fallen to its knees.

Penn State University is a victim of its own hubris and JoePa's inability to responsibly deal with his first real world adult decision.

President Obama: There You Go Again
Lisa Jain Thompson
Monday, 09 July 2012
Washington, DC, USA. I have never been an Obama Fanatic, nor was I a diehard true believer of any other recent president with the possible exception of Jack Kennedy when I was 12.

It should be blindingly obvious that I was never a diehard true believer of W, Bubba, Senior, or Dutch, or any president for that matter. By the end of Jimmy C's third year, I knew he was a goner. My only hope was that he didn't take the country with him.

Independence Day 2012

Washington, DC, USA. I sing today of the thirteen united STATES OF AMERICA who held certain truths to be SELF-EVIDENT in UNANIMOUS DECLARATION.

We the People of the United States do mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Send In Those Clown Questions, Bro
Lisa Jain Thompson
Sunday, 17 June 2012
Fairfax, VA, USA. I await the clown car with my daily hate mail once transgender activists get hold of my central point and can't resist asking their typical clown questions.

But to get started on this, we need to review my Sicilian heritage. Yes, that is what I just said. Bear with me on this.

Bucking The Bucket List
Lisa Jain Thompson
Sunday, 03 June 2012
Fairfax, VA, USA. Surely you have been tempted by the call of a Bucket List. Perhaps you even made one for yourself, despite the fear it will become the proverbial bucket of spit.

They are the contemporary Cat’s Meow. So why not make one? I can be as truly intellectual as the next person, up to the challenge, consumed with thoughts about my impending mortality.

The Fungibility of Reality
Lisa Jain Thompson
Sunday, 26 February 2012
Washington, DC, USA. In this, our all so post-modern world, the left and right extremes, the political base of Democrats and Republicans respectively, treat reality as if truth is freely exchangeable, in whole or in part, with some fantastical gospel that conforms to their own self-fabricated artifacts and fables.

Left and Right, Right and Left, following their own drummers in a march, humming hymns and anthems, chanting repetitive slogans, and waving their splendid banners and gloriously const
A Measured Response
Lisa Jain Thompson
Sunday, 12 February 2012
Washington, DC, USA. We have grown accustomed to hearing gunfire in the streets. Casually launched personal attacks are routine in the half-civilized, lawless existence that is the internet.

Rather than some shiny exemplar of modernity, the internet is more like a sprawling jumbled mass of huts, tents, cabins and saloons. A small town; in many ways, a very strange small town.

Wide Eyed In Babylon
Lisa Jain Thompson
Tuesday, 31 January 2012
Washington, DC, USA. From the viewpoint of evolutionary biology, if such a thing can be said to have a viewpoint, the female body is designed to attract and retain, if possible, the male. Similarly, the male body has evolved to be sexually attractive to the female.

That is the way of the world. The way of primates and most all of the creatures on this planet, God or no. The human way.

The Good Grooming Reality Show
Lisa Jain Thompson
Sunday, 15 January 2012
Washington, DC, USA. Strip the Human Race absolutely naked and what is left? It is the eye of other people that ruin us. [N1]

Although we enter the world most certainly without clothes, each and most every one of us lives in society that require us to be dressed. The clothes often wear us, rather than we, them.

Unfinished Sonata From Columnist To Reader
Lisa Jain Thompson
Wednesday, 11 January 2012
Washington, DC, USA. When in the course of human events … Sorry, that’s been used hasn’t it? What about We, The People — nope, even I have used that crutch far too many times.

The first thing you need when writing a column is a writer. All present and accounted for and seated at my laptop listening to the quintessential American composer Charles Ives.
