Digital Access Boosts Access To Romantic Prospects
Ok, one online dater said "Where else can you go in a matter of 20 minutes [and] look at 200 women who are single and want to go on dates? If that isn't a description of a soft-core porn site, I'm not sure what is. But then I met Sharon the old fashioned way (by talking to her in person).

Demand Good Governance For America
I have since revised my stance on Senators; They should be Appointed by the governor/Government of the various states and NOT elected by a vote of the people. The problem with electing them through a popular vote is that they then begin to use tax monies to pander for votes and NOT what is good for the country. The House of Reps were to represent the people of the country and the Senate was to represent the States. Now with the change that was made, we might as well go to a unicameral congress. As for Gerrymandering, too many times districts become so stretched and distorted so as to provide "representation" for some...

Your point is well made LIsa. The Quaker Peace Movement which I support came directly out of our Civil War. Opinion enforced through military might will eventually fail. That Eire is not a united free country is a sad relic of history but I believe one day reconciliation will be complete and reunification will occur. I understand your article ending now. Proud Dominants and Submissive Gamers
ONLY reason I went to a Psychologist that was knowledgeable in the area of Transsexualism was to get my letter for surgery. About three sessions and she said she had no doubt** and was pleased to write my letter. Luckily the surgeon I had selected (in Thailand) only required one letter for his "elderly" patients ( I was over 60). That was over 8 years ago and I'm living my life quietly with no problems and no questions from the neighbors or shop keepers. ** Heck, I no doubts LONG before I went to see her, but circumstances were such that I couldn't act sooner.
-
Proud Dominants and Submissive Gamers
Think you knew what you were doing Janet, I don't believe in luck. All a psychiatrist can do is say "change your coping strategy" when you do that things happen. If you want something badly enough you find a way. If you can't get things free you pay that's the same whatever you want.
-
Proud Dominants and Submissive Gamers
I went to a psychiatrist I knew and trusted, and told her what was going on. She treated me for the depression arising from the mismatched body (without psychogenic drugs!) 'till what little doubt there was in her mind was gone and then wrote me a referal letter for hormones. Now I'm into my real-life test, 'though I'd get my surgery tomorrow if I could get (1) a respectable surgeon to do it, and (2) a way to pay for it. How is it that a fifty-plus old proceedure with an equally old track record of curing gender disphoria is still considered experimental or cosmetic? The insurance company seems happy to pay my psyc...

It's is nice to know that the British still think well of someone who would force men to true belief with the sword. With Cromwell, the British substituted one tyranny for another. As would both the Left and the Right in this country. I would rather die free than live and bend my name to tyranny. When are you going to let Ireland become one people again? Blood still stains the hands of the sceptred isle.
-
Wide Eyed In Babylon
I was 100% with you until "Both of them would be Oliver Cromwell if given the chance." which I didn't understand. In England we credit Cromwell with ending "The Divine Right of Kings" that the James 1 Bible did it's best to promote. He's rightly hated for what he did in Ireland but without him our respective democracies would not have formed the way they did or is that the curse?

Etymology-Man
Randall said that when he was a kid, he "had an irrationally powerful fear of tsunamis (Etymology-Man would suggest cymophobia)". The dictionary definition of cymophobia is "a fear of waves, sea swells", from the French cyme (top, summit). On the other hand, cynophobia is "an irrational fear of dogs", from the Greek (dog, fear). and, of course, ailurophobia is the persistent, irrational fear of cats, from the Greek (cat, fear). So, Etymologically Speaking, the ultimate danger arrives when it rains cats and dogs.

What About Non-op Transsexuals? A No-op Notion
Bo, I've been around for a long time and belonged to a couple of groups, I understand people like Micheal quite well; There was no shouting, but then I don't believe in "beating around the bush" either. I've always found in both personal life and business life that being quite clear and plain spoken is best and eliminates any misunderstanding of opinion and stance. I've heard more than one like Micheal that "wishy-wash" and want to claim to be what they are not. Just my way I have no problem if he wants to cross dress the rest of his life, just don't claim to be "transsexual" or demand the privileges of those that are...

What About Non-op Transsexuals? A No-op Notion
There has been a lot of back and forth over the years regarding this column. The coments here have ranged from calm and reasoned on through irrational. Some have been among the very worst I have ever seen. We have blocked the most disgusting among them from publication. It is in that context that I have to say Pamela's comments, while not my way, did not cross the line.
-
What About Non-op Transsexuals? A No-op Notion
I found Pamela reaction to Michael's attempt to voice his view quiet aggressive! It sounds really like 'you against us' or 'we against them' although Michael isn't a troll, doesn't seams to be allowed a single metaphors to convey his personal experience though Michael never claimed being transsexual nor even male but a man. Pamela seams to shouts and has a patronizing tone over an articulated admitting transgender man which just attempted to voice a feeling but apparently debate is only allowed between individuals of her own stand! It looks like because he admitted being transgender is bad enough for Pamela to punch o...

The Good Grooming Reality Show
You nailed it Janet. I remember some years ago attending a meeting of a supposedly state wide organization ( that finally failed) ; I was was wearing a pair dof dress slacks, a nice white blouse and a light weight jacket; My companion was wearing a very expensive women's business suit with a skirt and both of us were in heels. The "leader" of the group appeared in wrinkled shorts, equally wrinkled blouse ( it looked like they had been slept in for a week) and her hair had been done with a food blender. I asked my friend if that was how this person appeared before legislators and other such meetings and was assured th...

Big 2012 Question For US States: Raise Or Cut Taxes
When money is tight, one MUST budget and cut expenses; That includes governments. TO THINK that ANY tax payer should be a source of unlimited funds for government programs is total nonsense. Why stop at the "rich" why not just take ALL the money and hand back what they think the person that earned that money deserves. OH, WAIT, That would make them slaves or serfs to the all powerful state that feels it has the right to tax and spend as they see fit. How sad that our country has sunk so low.

Building a Health Insurance Marketplace One Step at a Time
The (Republican) State Insurance Comissioner was awarded a 35 million dollar grant to cover planning and startup costs for a healthcare exchange. Then came the new governor, Sam Brownback, who refused the federal money in terror that accepting it might make it look like he supported Obama's healthcare program, and ruin his future prospects as a presidential candidate. The insurance department is continuing work, but at a much slower pace than it would have with the federal money.

Brain Before Body: The Spemann-Mangold Experiments
Hello, Dr. Higgins. Thank you for your lucid and informative comment, which we view as an important clarification. You and other investigators have made significant contributions to this field. We have updated the article with your information.

Brain Before Body: The Spemann-Mangold Experiments
Generally a nice essay, but an important detail is incorrect. Mangold's transplanted cells induced the formation of the second nervous system. By using a species of salamander that had two color phenotypes, and transplanting tissues from one color type to the other, she demonstrated unquestionably that the second nervous system was made of tissue from the host, not the transplant.

The Good Grooming Reality Show
At my support group last Saturday, the conversation was dominated by a single subject: How poorly the pre-eminent local transgender activist reflects on transsexual & transgender people. When you are a public figure, even if as an activist, rather than an office holder, you really need to look the part. If you are presenting as female, for God's sake wear a bra, have a decent hair style, and dress for the occasion. If you are presenting as male, wear a suit and tie and have your hair and beard neat. When testifying before legislative bodies of whatever level, dressing like a lawyer going to court is unlikely to go...

States Struggle With National Sex Offender Law
First let’s commend Maggie Clark for writing this article and getting the facts correct. Thank You. A few points I would like to bring to light. In paragraph 3: “It's not that states are uninformed about the law” “They are reluctant to bear the cost” I find the objection very interesting, cost not constitutionality or effectiveness. States like Ohio, Alaska, New Jersey, and Nebraska have raised the issues of constitutionality and effectiveness. Ohio & Alaska: The Ohio, Alaska, Supreme courts ruled aspects of the Adam Walsh Act unconstitutional. New Jersey: A recent study by the New Jersey Department of C...

Many Roads To Rome
I suppose for me the biggest purpose of going to a support group was simply provided a safe place to get out and function in a female role. But I have to admit, if that is all I had done in female role before I transitioned, I'd have still been incredibly tense and stuck out like a sore thumb when I did transition, whereas since I'd introduced myself to the world as Janet in phases over something more than a year, my final bit of transition (at work) went really smoothly. . .

I have always wondered exactly what benefit of meeting with others enduring transition is ultimately other than providing reassurance that you are not the only one who is transsexual. I went to just three such meetings and only then because my psychiatrist insisted. It doesn't matter what walk of life you choose to examine there are always those who believe they and only they have the one true answer to any issue you care to name. Even in science and engineering problems there are indivuals who lay claim to being the one with the only answer to a problem. The eventual outcome of any transition usually depends entirel...

What Does Rick Really Want?
Pamela, are you talking about the authors, Madonna & Young? If so, you got it wrong. The focus of this column is a pragamatic evaluation of current events. Their analysis is dispassionate and largely correct.

What Does Rick Really Want?
Written by a true liberal no doubt who thinks we should select another "McCain" named Romney this time; another liberal progressive that they think that Obama can beat just as he did McCain. Ron Paul has some good ideas and then goes completely bonkers on foreign policy and would leave the USA in a dangerous position. Although Newt has some baggage, He's bright, knowledgeable and well experiencedd in the government.

More Las Vegas Water Means More Rural Resentment
All they need to do is cross the state line into California and take a look at what happened to the Owens Valley when the Los Angeles water district tapped into its aquifers and began draining it to water the semi-arid southern California city of Los Angeles. Can you say desertification, drying up of lakes and streams, death to farmers and ranchers in the valley? If one looks at Las Vegas, there is a tremendous WASTE of water with giant fountains and thousands of acres of swimming pools and other open "lakes" of water that evaporate into the dry atmosphere. I think Las Vegas NEEDS to be put on a "desert diet" and all ...

Office Ceiling Simulates Bright and Partly Cloudy Sky
Interestingly enough, One of the earliest "lighting" studies was done in the early 30's at a company ( wish I could recall the name) to see how different conditions affected worker satisfaction and output. A small group of workers were selectd and put into a separate work area. The studies involved changes in lighting and to the surprise of the researchers , worker output improved; It wasn't until years later that a re-examination of the data indicated that the lighting and other changes weren't what made the difference, it was that the workers perceived the attention being paid to them and their satisfaction that re...

The description of the Group Meetings with the Doctor in charge reminds me of the group meetings my Psychologist would hold; We had all those people there. It was kind of sad/funny sometimes. I wasn't worried as the Doctor had already realized that I was Transsexual and said she would write my letter for my surgery. My first Psychologist had already started me on hormone therapy having also decided that I was TS, he was in Orlando and I had then moved to Tampa. Whoa. Gatekeepers, gatekeepers, everywhere, but were there any to trust? Things are not quite so adversarial these days: First I researched transsexuality on the Internet. The web sites by Lynn Conway and Becky Allison convinced me that I could transition successfully. (Which probably saved my life.) I then went to a transgender conference, and went to the talks by a surgeon who convinced me that I didn't need near as much work as I thought I would. Then I went to a psych I'd previously seen for anxiety & depression, spent six months working to control the depression (without drugs) which had reached new depths ...

The Incredible Earnestness Of Being Non-Op
I said it in reference to "TwilightPrincess" almost a year ago. TwilightP said: Please, consider for a a second what is really being said here. It is a contradiction to say that a person is capable being one gender while inhabiting the body of the other, and then to turn around and deny that same person their gender identity just because they choose not to have a particular surgery. To address the concern about sex, if a man has sex with me, it is a heterosexual act, even if I have a penis. Sex with me does not make a man gay. Granted, I have to find men who are very comfortable in their own sexualities, but that is n...

The Incredible Earnestness Of Being Non-Op
Who on this site said you are "a homosexual man for having a penis"? Most certainly, it was neither Lisa nor me. Moreover, you will have to look hard in the comments here to find such a statement. So, can you be specific? Where exactly did you see that statement?
-
The Incredible Earnestness Of Being Non-Op
Ah there you go again. Who said you were a homosexual man? Not Sharon or I (the only ones who can speak for TS-Si). There are a lot of comments from readers just like you and they run the entire gamut of opinion. We seldom censor comments unless the person making the comment becomes abusive or it becomes obvious that they are simply trolling to start an argument. So, who told you you were homosexual anyway?
-
The Incredible Earnestness Of Being Non-Op
As I've said I'm not taking your opinions or facts if you want to call them. I was in early stages when I was 12. I know plenty about myself. My commetss on sex were only in response to others statements here that I am a homosexual man for having a penis which is simply a disturbing message to see open to the public. If this website had not been at the top of google search I would ignore it. The fact that it is worries me for others safety. I only want to have an alternate view present. I am not confused. And fromwhat I've heard from several respected transpeople it is not uncommon.

The Incredible Earnestness Of Being Non-Op
Our position has always been and remains that you can do whatever you want with your life. We defend that right endlessly in political, social, and religious forums. We are on your side. However, which sex you desire to have sex with has nothing to do with being transsexual. Sexual desire (hetero-, homo-, or bi-) is a separate genetic stream. You can be a woman and desire men. You can be a woman and desire other women. Or you can desire both men and women. Or neither -- be an island unto yourself. If you tell me you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight, you tell me nothing about whether yo...

Does that also make me less of a woman because I dint want a vagina for penises to penetrate. When Males Overestimate Female Desire
Too many men think they are more attractive to women than they are; This is partially due to a tendency to think with their penis when all the blood rushes to that organ starving the brain. Of course TV ads contribute to this by the images they portray. Who in the world imagined that some jerk with a scruffy look because he failed to shave is attractive to a woman ?

Rising Influence Of Courtroom Neuroscience
Sounds like a lot of Blah blah blah; The real question is; "does the person know right from wrong" if they do, then the drug addition or immaturity has no bearing. The claim that their are effective treatments for drug additions is also suspect, I would want to see the rates of recidivism, I would bet its quite high. Some of the same arguments could be made for the chronic alcoholic that kills someone in an accident; they willingly got drunk and are STILL responsible for a death and do deserve punishment including life in jail.

Transvestism Is a Narcotic Drug
Thanks Lisa, nice one saved me the trouble! All can say too mee1947 is this could you stop if you had too? I doubt it. Whether you could or couldn't is irrelevant you make the fundemental mistake of conflating transgender with transsexual. Transgender is a "nice" word for transvestite which is what you are. Look, I care not what sexual activities you enjoy it's the conflation of two quite distinct conditions that is causing transsexuals untold grief and very real trauma. mee1947 enjoy your harmless pastime with my blessing (not that you need it) just understand that transsexual is not transgender nor anything like.

Defiant Jurors On Internet Pose Dilemma For Courts
If it's a problem, then take away their cell phones, iPods, laptops and then lock them up in a hotel room until after the trial; Alternatively, require lawyers on BOTH sides to present ALL the information about the defendant and all the available information about the law and definitions. Trials in this country have become too much of a one-ups-manship between lawyers instead of an honest presentation of the facts involved and we have to many "defense" lawyers trying to get people off that they KNOW are guilty of the crime. A trial should be about justice and not a game.

The reason we have a right to a trial by a jury of our peers, is that jurors are presumed to serve justice, not the law, which can be and often is arbitrary.

Shift Workers, Older People, and Social Exclusion
Other health factors held equal, there is a proven relationship between socialization, maintainable health, life expectancy. This study deals with social exclusion, for which there is little hard data. It is a start for the UK, where there has been relatively little attention to the problem compared to other industrialized countries. Research requires patience and a willingness to question common sense assumptions.

Shift Workers, Older People, and Social Exclusion
"Feeling part of society usually involves participating in certain activities such as sports, the arts, volunteering or social networking," says Dr Matt Barnes who led the research WOW!! who would have guessed? Should I assume that there is evidence to back this up or is it just his "opinion". I might agree that "social networking" helps make you feel a part of society, but "sports, the arts, and volunteering", sound like a page out of some "do-gooders" dream book.

What About Non-op Transsexuals? A No-op Notion
Uxia, the article (first published in 2006) -- and the comments -- amply answered your question. Moreover, the title of your comment is unjustified by a fair reading of what I actually wrote. Honest disagreement does not imply hate, but I will try again: (1) Your definition of transsexual avoids the recognition of anatomical sex and substitutes physical gender. This mixes up a scientific/medical description with sociopolitical considerations. (2) You mixed up the individuals with legitimate reasons to defer surgery with those who choose to avoid surgery. The former may be dealing with an ...

What About Non-op Transsexuals? A No-op Notion
First, I'm not a moron, Second, Non-Op TS isn't an oxymoron. Non-Op Transsexual. Lets break this down: 1. Non Op - Opting to not have the operation 2. Transsexual - An individual whose mind/brain/psych doesn't match their physical gender. 3. Non Op Transsexual - An individual whose mind doesn't match their physical gender, and does not choose to have an operation to align them (for whatever reason). 4. Oxymoron - A figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in “cruel kindness” or “to make haste slowly.” How is this an oxymoron? Thanks.

US Delays In Acquiring Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines
Interesting study, but a very small response of the targeted group of researchers (205 out of 1400 surveyed and 400 responses). Of the problems reported in obtaining the research lines, 95 (46.34%) appear to be related to legal considerations of the MTA and Federal considerations; 27% (55 researchers) were NOT approved by the research Institution which is NOT related to the difficulty in obtaining stem cells for research. Of the 205, only 39 were related to the "owner" not "willing" to share, there could be innumerable reasons for this. This means that 73.2 % were NOT related to a lack of sharing but to other problems...

While I applaud this judgement and is clearly justified in this case; what always concerns me in judgements like this one is the tendency for others to use these cases as a crack in the door to gain rights to which they have no entitlement. Cases where were their individual circumstance would not in fact have won judgement had it come to a court. I point to the UK where exceptions provided for under GRA have been exploited to grant recognition to individuals who clearly would not have qualified them prior to legislation. Where had their situations been the subject of debate during the passing of GRA the act would neve...

After The World Changed
It all sounds familiar; I have yet to learn how I can "Retain water" around my ankles and still dribble my panties when trying to get my clothes down in the restroom. I reffed Soccer and rapidly learned that I NEEDED to wear a sports bra when I ran. Ever tried to change a Ref jersey on a soccer pitch full of males without revealing you were wearing a bra?

The problem doesn't lie with those women who are transitioning toward SRS. The problem is with the delusional transvestite men who when cross dressed imagine that they are truly women and feel they have every right to use women's facilities. Acceptance and the law has changed greatly in the last 30 years but I see no solution to that problem.

I agree in that Female restrooms are generally divided into individual stalls where any possible exposure of genitals would occur. It would be hazardous in many instances for a Transsexual MtF when dressed as a female to use the male restroom. Changing rooms and other dressing area would indeed be more problematic, although in department stores and other places where clothing is purchased, the changing rooms are usually enclosed and not in view of others. Gyms and swimming pools would present their own problems, especially with the showers, and in those instances, people with a penis do not belong.

The Rhode Island Public Pension Vote
Some times even democrats wake up to the fact that you can't keep promising the moon to public unions and there comes a time to pay the piper. The fact that Unions can control the primaries is ludicrous and yu end up with representatives that represent the union, BUT NOT the taxpayer.

Our position has always been that an individual (in this case M2F) who is provably on track to surgical correction, and has taken the initial steps via hormonal reconsitution and possible name change, should have access to female restrooms. We do not, however, extend that to changing rooms and other places where visual exposure is likely.

Nice to see common sense in: "The law does not require employers to allow a physical male presenting as a woman to use the woman’s bathroom. As discussed elsewhere ad nauseam, a person with a working penis, no matter how they may be dressed, is a man. An individual with male genitalia using a women’s restroom does present a “different or special hazard,” and an increased litigation risk. Such lawsuits could include claims for invasion of privacy or sexual harassment."

Federal Health Law Benefits To Include Children Of State Workers
Oh Sure and now you can make ALL the taxpayers responsible for the health care of your children at a rate that MANY taxpayers will not see. How "Wonderful". I don't dislike children, but I then a parent should be responsible for all the costs of raising that child. State workers are NOT underpaid and covering people that are at or below 250% of the poverty level means they ARE NOT poor. Perhaps they should give up their cigarettes, expensive cell phones, 2nd automobile, 50 inch 3-D TV, and a few other such "necessities". Thee is NO EXCUSE for switching these costs to all the taxpayers.
