"There's a market for an effeminate young man such as yourself."
London, UK. A psychiatrist accused of rushing patients into having sex change ops suggested to one he should work as a prostitute to finance the surgery, the General Medical Council heard today.
Doctor Russell Reid told the then 21 year-old male to female transsexual "there is always a market for effeminate young men such as yourself", it was said.
Patient E, who has now had a full sex change, heard about Dr Reid's private clinic specialising in gender dysphoria on the internet.
Richard Tyson, counsel for four psychiatrists and a patient who have complained about the doctor told the hearing: "Prior to the first consultation she had been told by a number of transsexuals that when she met Dr Reid he would do one of two things. 'Either he would come on to me or he would suggest I went on the game' ".
And describing the patient's second consultation with the psychiatrist in April 1999 Mr Tyson went on: "Dr Reid asked how she intended to support herself through her gender transition. The patient said she was going to try to work in the computer field and Dr Reid agreed this was a good idea as it was likely to pay well.
"According to the patient Dr Reid then said words to the effect of 'You could always try escort work'. It is also alleged he said "There's a market for an effeminate young man such as yourself."
"Patient E got the impression that Dr Reid was suggesting she should prostitute herself to pay for the treatment because Dr Reid told her that it wouldn't be cheap and she would need the means to get through it."
