No neutral human person without distinction of sex
Springfield, VA, USA. Science and the Roman Catholic Church agree that there is no neutral human person without distinction of sex. Mammals, including the primates of which humankind are but one, divide into male and female (not including a small number handful of intersex birth). Science and the Church also agree that the same essentially identical human nature appears in the male and female sex in two-fold personal form .
There are male and female persons. Why then has the Church become so radically opposed to men and women born with Harry Benjamin Syndrome (HBS formerly identified as transsexuality)?
I believe it all is a misunderstanding stemming from a cultural tendency to confuse homosexuality (which the Church historically has condemned in theory if not practice) and cross-dressing with HBS, a tendency not limited to the Catholic Church. The same misunderstanding occurred when Galileo announced that the earth revolves around the sun (not the reverse), undermining the cultural belief that the earth was the center of creation, around which the universe revolved. The Church, however, although sometimes reluctant to quickly embrace science, eventually accepted the mounting scientific evidence and, in 1992, Pope John Paul II pardoned Galileo, 359 years after The Inquisition condemned him. (I never said the church came to its senses quickly.)
But, surprisingly or perhaps not, there are many areas in which the Church and HBS men and women find common ground. We both believe that there is no such thing as a sexually neutral human being. The sexual body in which we reside cannot be separated from who we are on the inside. We cannot be separated into our minds (souls) and our bodies as if they were two separate things. The mind informing the body constitutes the full conception of the human body only in its union with the body.
Moreover, we both believe that the indisputable results of anatomical, physiological and psychological research show a difference so far-reaching between male and female that the following can is established as a scientific result: the female personality assumes the complete human nature in a different manner from the male. The differences between male and female minds exist independently of the primary and secondary peculiarities of the individual body. The individuality of a "person" belongs neither to the mind nor to the body alone but to a combination of the two.
How did we come to this apparent impasse between the Church and HBS?
We can disown the ancient religious conflicts about the sinfulness of homosexuality. Homosexuality is a fight in which HBS men and women are merely spectators on the sidelines. Whether we are straight, gay, or lesbian is not central to HBS. Whether we support gay rights or agree with social conservatives that homosexuality is wrong is a personal belief distinct from having HBS.
Once we separate HBS from homosexuality in the eyes of the Church (and the society in which we live), we can begin to change the tenor of the discussion. When we demonstrate that HBS men and women are not cross-dressers or drag queens, we can focus the Church on the science and the medicine. When we show the Church that we too believe that there is no neutral human person without distinction of sex, that we too believe the universe created us male and female, and when we show her the science, the
genetics and the neurobiology, the Church too will move to our side and accept HBS men and women as children of God and full members of the Church. I'm not saying that change will come quickly, but Pope Benedict XVI is a rational man. Nor am I saying that the argument will be won easily, but Pope Benedict XVI is a rational man. When we approach him with good science, the multitudinous peer reviewed papers and reports, and our calm, rational sexuality, he will question us, challenge us so we had better have our act together, but I have no doubts that Pope Benedict XVI is a rational man who does not want another Galileo.
We want to approach HBS rationally, without political demands for radical changes to Church and Society. Change occurs incrementally. Even a sea change like quantum physics has been going on a hundred years and there is still rigorous discussion about its various aspects. We cannot expect the Church to undergo a sudden revelation, but we can influence and trigger the revelation we want if we stick to the hard science and medicine and do not demand the world change for us overnight.
If, however, HBS men and women allow HBS to be caught up in social theories of gender spectrums and non-binary sexualities, we will find our way blocked by the vast majority within the Church and within society who believe that humanity divides into male and female, man and woman. We need clearly state that, although we may or may not support the gender spectrum and sexual spectrum theorists, that fight is not our fight.
We are HBS men and women, male and female. We do not plan to change the world, only our bodies to agree with who we are in our souls. We are not revolutionaries.
HBS gender identity (
brain sex) remains constant from before birth and does not change throughout our lifetimes. What changes, with Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS), are the mismatched outward genitals that we were born with. SRS provides a female brain with female genitals, a male brain with male genitals, resolving the internal discordance between neurobiology and genitals. We are on the frontiers of medicine, not the frontiers of society or religion. If approached rationally, with the science and medicine in hand, the Church will understand. For Pope Benedict XVI and the popes who will follow are rational men who believe, with Carl Sagan, that
It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is
than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.
