Showdown At The Not Quite Ok Web Blogs

Fairfax, VA, USA. Elsewhere on the internet, in the web blogs and their knee jerk ranting comments, the world wide transgender range wars rage on.

The proponents see themselves as white hats and the targets of their philippic harangues as unscrupulous villains dressed in black from head and toe.

I read very few of these blogs, other than those pointed out to us here at TS-Si as possibly being of interest to us on these pages. [N1] But that doesn’t mean I am ignorant of the essence of what is going down out there, or that I will not write about the bluster and the clamor.

If the web arguments were conducted person to person in 3-D, blood would be shed instead of logic and decorum. Distance has its virtues.

...if you are anxious to make a fight I will go anywhere on earth to make a fight with you..

— Wyatt Earp to Ike Clanton,

The blog warriors conceptualize themselves as modern day gunslingers, assuming the role of marshals without badges in the internet wild west.

But just as in the real American West of history, when high noon arrives, there is often no clear line of demarcation between good and evil. Frequently the emotionally violent arguments focus on who might be the whitest shade of gray.

In many ways, the blogs are junior high school, with the self-select few attempting to impose their will in the hallways.

Virgil Earp was then city marshal; Morgan Earp was a special policeman for six weeks or two months, wore a badge and drew pay. I had been sworn in Virgil's place, to act for him while Virgil was gone to Tucson on Spence's and Stilwell's trial. Virgil had been back several days but I was still acting and I knew it was Virgil's duty to disarm those men. I expected he would have trouble in doing so, and I followed up to give assistance if necessary, especially as they had been threatening us, as I have already stated. [N2]

The most vocal bloggers and their fawning sycophants attack in packs, descending upon their chosen victims, forming unschooled bands of brothers intent on silencing their selected target. They are the engineer, the conductor, and the passengers on a train of their own making. If their target doesn’t follow the rigid tracks laid down by the blogger, declaration of war soon follows.

Just at that time Doc Holliday and the Earps appeared on the sidewalk; the sheriff stepped out to meet them; he told them that he had this party in charge; they walked right by him. I stepped out and met Wyatt Earp; he stuck his - six shooter at me and said, 'Throw up your hands!' The marshal also told the other boys to throw up their hands; Frank McLowry and Billy Clanton threw up; Tom McLowry threw open his coat and said he had nothing; they said you's s— of b——s came here to make a fight; at the same instant Doc Holliday and Morgan Earp shot; Morgan shot Billy Clanton, and I don't know which of the boys he shot; I saw Virg shooting at the same time; I grabbed Wyatt Earp and pushed him around the corner and then ran throught the photograph gallery; at the same time I saw Billy Clanton fall; when I got away.

… Our crowd did not expect an attack until some one told us; at the time they made the attack I had no arms … It was two days prior since I saw Billy or Frank McLowry until that morning; had never had a word of conversation with either of them in my life; I don't know whether the party had a shotgun; Virgil Earp was about six feet from me; they were three or four feet distant when, they fired; I did not see my brother or either of the McLowrys fire a shot. There were four or five shots fired before I left the ground … [N3]

They are never responsible for what happens, of course, but that doesn’t stop them from trying to earn a rep and be will known. Achieving Five minutes of fame has become a goal in itself. Fifteen minutes is a lifetime on the internet blogs.

Like a five year old child, the attack bloggers demand their attention. They would have us take seriously their incoherent assaults on each other. Ignoring them is often the best medicine and most prudent choice.

You cannot ignore a child but you need not read the anti-intellectual collective the world of gender blogs has become. There’s no point. In a world of science and logic, the gender blogs cloister themselves in angry invective and self-righteousness.

About ten minutes afterwards, and while Virgil, Morgan, Doc Holliday and myself were standing on the comer of Fourth and Allen Streets, several people said, "There is going to be trouble with those fellows," and one man named Coleman said to Virgil Earp, "They mean trouble. They have just gone from Dunbar's Corral into the O.K. Corral, all armed, and I think you had better go and disarm them." Virgil turned around to Doc Holliday, Morgan Earp and myself and told us to come and assist him in disarming them. [N4]

The gender bloggers belief that they are changing the world has little to do with their actual influence. Most gender blogs are frequented by the already converted. The ongoing conversation is inbred and most resembles a losing football team attempting to rally itself in a halftime locker room. Once out in the bright lights of the public field, however, their voices are lost in the great swell of the crowd.

The blogs are just that, blogs, and significantly cheaper than a weekly hour with your therapists.

They are so misinformed that the gender bloggers often refer to TS-Si as a blog. Somehow they avoid the thousands of science articles and see only what they want to see. It must be nice to avoid science that might provide true argument against questionable philosophical stances.

The truth will set you free but it might also prove you wrong.

I never fired at Ike Clanton, even after the shooting commenced, because I thought he was unarmed. I believed then, and believe now, from the acts I have stated and the threats I have related and the other threats communicated to me by other persons as having been made by Tom McLaury, Frank McLaury, and Ike Clanton, that these men last named had formed a conspiracy to murder my brothers, Morgan and Virgil, Doc Holliday and myself. I believe I would have been legally and morally justified in shooting any of them on sight, but I did not do so …

… I did not intend to fight unless it became necessary in self-defense and in the performance of official duty. When Billy Clanton and Frank McLaury drew their pistols, I knew it was a fight for life, and I drew in defense of my own life and the lives of my brothers and Doc Holliday. [N5]

Although silence may be a source of great strength, [N6] silence is easy to read as consent to the noisy demands of the mob. Alternately, those who oppose you may interpret silence as having achieved their goals of successful intimidation.

There are moments when silence will not serve, moments when someone must point out that the attack bloggers have no clothes.

The battle still rages, the shouting grows ever louder, but perhaps this is the moment to raise the flag above Iwo Jima and declare the blog wars over.

But I doubt that will happen. The clueless will always be with us.

Notes[N1] The word “Pages” is obviously the wrong noun for electronic media but a better one that is as simple and graceful does not spring easily to mind. In this instance, the authorial choice of “pages” should be considered metaphorical.

[N6] Lao Tzu (Chinese, Laozi) was a philosopher of ancient China and is a central figure in Taoism. His work has been hornored throughout history by various anti-authoritarian movements. Traditionally, it has been thought that Lao Tzu lived in the 6th century BC. However, some historians disagree on various details, including when he lived, if he is a single person or a synthesis of multiple figures, or even of he is a mythical figure.
