As you read this, the reverend fathers of the Council of APA are meeting in closed sessions to develop a formula containing in brief statements and descriptives, the fundamental tenets of which comprise the core transgender beliefs. If we credit not the teachings of individual shrinks, therapists, and wackos, attention must be paid to the DSM [cf. Note] which the American Psychiatric Association (APA) preserves always and maintains inviolate. The number of specific diagnostic criteria in the DSM continues to expand exponentially as more and more “mental processes” are included and become reimbursable by medical insurance companies. Although the conflict of purpose between both discovering new diagnoses and simultaneously establishing approval of financial reimbursements should obviously be examined thoroughly, that particular indiscretion is not the subject today. Anyone who does not realize that the foxes are already loose in the chicken house is probably spending too much time watching reality television or they, themselves, are a part of the income stream. The local automobile mechanic established his prices for working under the hood without outside review, so why shouldn’t the APA through the DSM be able to establish their own price list for working under the human hood? If you don’t like the work the APA is doing, you can always exercise your personal judgment and go up the street to another mechanic whose methods seem more reasonable. But I don’t want to write about the APA and the DSM. Others can do that (TS-Si has a whole section on the subject). I want to discuss the Transgender Creed as established by the ongoing Council of APA. The Transgender CreedI believe in Transgender, the Umbrella Almighty, Creator of all things genderwise,
and in Virginia Charles Prince, his only son, prophet of crossdressers and transvestites; who conceived Transvestia and gave birth heterosexually to The Society for the Second Self; suffered under the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, was crucified for his beliefs and his frocks and his make-up, and was buried when his actual opinions became too troublesome. I believe in Transgender which sits at the right hand of truth, justice, and the American way and shall come to judge the living and the dead, that all might know they were born transgender and be able to use that as an excuse for everything and anything they might wish to do or action they might take. I believe in the transgender activists, the holy transgender umbrella, and the communion of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transsexuals, and the Intersex under the great transgender mandala, the wheel of all life. I believe in the forgiveness of all those who submit to transgender, even those who might actually be transsexual, the unnecessariousness of sex reassignment surgery, and life everlasting in the gender of the clothes I wear and whatever identification I choose to use today. The theological specifics of this Creed appear to have been originally formulated as a refutation to heterosexuality in general and transsexuality in the specific. As such, it does not necessarily address the many scientific questions that have become objects of dispute as the Creed expanded to include anyone and everyone who might not be heterosexual or who, at some time after their birth, have expressed unhappiness with their sex, their body, their lives, or their place in society. Symbolum Transgenderum The ancient and revered Symbolum Transgenderum takes its form from ancient ritual that is lost in the distant, closeted past as long as one doesn’t look too hard or raise too many unanswerable questions. The Symbolum requires the complete acceptance and dedication, the full commitment of its Acolytes.
Do you renounce the sexual binary and all forces born transsexual which rebel against Transgender? Acolyte: I renounce the existence of both the binary and those born transsexual. Do you renounce all evil heterosexual powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of Transgender? Acolyte: I renounce all heterosexual evil powers. Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you away from the love of all things Transgender? Acolyte: I renounce all sinful desires. I do not get off on being transgender. I am not a crossdresser. I am not a transvestite. I am certainly not a person born transsexual. Do you turn to Transgender and accept it as your Savior? Acolyte: I turn to Transgender as my Savior. I am not a crossdresser. I am not a transvestite. I am certainly not a person born transsexual. Do you put your whole trust in Transgender and Professional Gender Advocates? Acolyte: I put my trust in Transgender and myself in the hands of Professional Gender Advocates. Do you promise to follow and obey Transgender as your Lord? Acolyte: I will follow and obey the Lords of Transgender. This is the Transgender Faith. This is the faith of Transgender. They are proud to profess it, in the warm hold of the great Transgender Umbrella, their Lord and master. They are not crossdressers. They are not transvestites. And they are certainly not, God forbid, a person born transsexual. Whatever you do, don’t take sides against anyone in the Transgender Family. Ever. And remember, when everything is said and done, always "take the cannoli" with you. NoteDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). The DSM covers all mental health disorders for both children and adults and lists known causes of these disorders, statistics in terms of gender, age at onset, and prognosis as well as some research concerning the optimal treatment approaches.
Mental Health Professionals use this manual when working with patients in order to better understand their illness and potential treatment and to help 3rd party payers (e.g., insurance) understand patient needs. The book is typically considered the bible for any professional who makes psychiatric diagnoses in the United States and many other countries. At times, the premises of the DSM are less than deeply rooted in rigorous scientific processes.
