Virginia’s Proposed Amendment: Vote no on Ballot Issue #1 and you vote yes for liberty
Springfield, Virginia, USA. The proposed amendment to the Virginia Constitution has been constructed with breathtaking disregard for the founding principles of both Virginia and our nation. Existing Virginia law already prohibits same-sex marriage. The so-called "Marriage Amendment" would apply to all residents, straight or gay, and deny legal recognition of unmarried relationships, without regard to their sexual orientation.
Proponents of this new intrusion claim it is necessary to block what they call “activist judges” from disabling the existing Virginia prohibition against same-sex marriage and/or forcing the state to recognize relationships from other states, whether called marriage or not.
The Transsexual Symposium opposes this attempt to constrict the rights of Virginia’s citizens, and extend such a myopic view of liberty to residents of other states.
Constitutions in America provide governmental structures while serving as bulwarks against the concentration of power and usurpation of individual rights. American history teaches that the preservation of liberty depends on the protection of divergent views, however disagreeable that may be to other segments of society. We protect minority views to ensure creative dissent.
We live in a time when stampeding mobs attempt to choke off the civil liberties of real or imagined homosexuals. Who is next on their list of targets? Religious or ethnic minorities? Vote no on Ballot Issue #1 and you vote yes for liberty.
Note: Virginia voters passed issue no. 1 with a majority.
