 St. Louis, MO, USA. The world famous snake known as WE recently died of natural causes at the World Aquarium. WE, a rat snake, was a 2-headed hermaphrodite albino. Over the years, WE was featured worldwide in over 450 magazine and newspaper articles, became the subject of numerous radio and television interviews, and entertained many visiting celebrities,
In December 2005, the aquarium put WE up for auction to support the conservation research, educational programming, and exhibit development at the World Aquarium. After the auction ended, the Aquarium received offers for the snake, but it was later decided to be in the best interest to keep it.
During the following summer, the World Aquarium received recognition for setting a world record for having the most living 2-headed animals in one exhibit. During this exhibition, scientists attempted to breed WE with another 2-headed snake, Golden Girls. Although both snakes enjoyed this meeting, no offspring were produced. Plans were currently being made to try again this summer.
On Halloween of 2006, it was announced that WE was sponsored by Nutra Pharma, a
 biotechnology company developing treatments for MS and HIV using modified snake venom. This sponsorship was designed to help further educate people about the importance of snakes and their role in the environment. A special memorial page has been setup on the World Aquarium website for visitors to pay their condolences to WE. Visitors may submit their comments about the impact WE has had on their lives. Additionally, visitors may also make a special donation to the World Aquarium’s WE Memorial Fund, which has been setup to help further the education and research initiatives at the World Aquarium.
